On the third Saturday of every month, from 9:00am – noon, EAC staff and volunteers work along sections of Sugar Creek in Bloomington and Normal to clear out invasive plants to make room for native species.  Many hands make light work! Come join us and learn about invasive plant identification and the importance of maintaining a healthy riparian zone.

Volunteers must be 18 years old or older (or 14 and accompanied by a parent or guardian) and be able to hike along uneven terrain and safely use basic hand tools such as loppers and bow saws.

Why Sugar Creek?

several volunteers removing invasive plants along Sugar CreekDid you know Sugar Creek is part of the McLean County Watershed? It feeds into Salt Creek and Upper Sangamon River Basin. These watersheds provide drinking water, wildlife habitat, recreational opportunities, and more for our community.

Removing invasive species and encouraging the growth of more native plants along this waterway helps improve creek health. Native plants have long root systems which help absorb water, reduce storm water runoff, and reduce creek bank erosion. Native plants are also beneficial for pollinators, insects, birds, and other wildlife. The diversity of native plants also help improve the aesthetics of the creek banks too.
